Wordless Wednesday: "My Father is Joyful"

Those who know Hebrew will recognize that the title of this post is my daughter's name! She is a senior in high school, the Captain of her school's Dance Team, a member of the National Model UN, a graduate of the National Young Leaders' Academy and one of the funniest people I have ever met. (Of course, I promise I am not at all biased!) This is her graduation photo. I cannot believe she will be leaving us next year, but applaud the adventurous spirit that urges her on to other places!

No matter what I do in life, she and her sister will be my greatest achievements, so I wanted to share this photo with my friends in the book blog world.

Saturday Snapshot: Orange Azaleas

Despite the rainy weather, the orange azalea in front of our porch is starting to bloom. I love the peachy blossoms!

Saturday Snapshot: At the Arboretum

I recently spent a lovely afternoon goofing around with daughter number two and my camera at Penn State's Arboretum, while gardens were spewing forth tulips at full tilt. I was particularly intrigued by this unusual variegated purple variety.

Saturday Snapshot: Balloon in the Backyard

We are spending the holiday weekend with my mom and dad in Tucson. Their home is on the edge of the Saguaro National Forest, near Sombrero Peak, which lots of balloonists use as a destination for tourists. There were three balloons out there this morning, including this lovely Moon Balloon.

Saturday Snapshot: Dipping Sauce Bowls

I was setting the table for an Asian Veggie Pancake feast, and I realized how much I loved the contrast of the Fiestaware dipping sauce bowls on the black and white striped table cloth. (My mother would remind me that I should have ironed the tablecloth, but I'd rather spend my time cooking the food! Sorry, Mom.)

Saturday Snapshot: Sign of Spring

We had an unusual warm-up in Central PA this week -- temperatures rose into the low 70s, and the world seemed to wake up! I found this little sign of spring in the front yard, and wanted to share. Hope spring is springing where you are, too -- unless fall ought to be falling, that is!

Saturday Snapshot: Snorchids

Normally, I am something of brown thumb when it comes to houseplants. Somehow, the combination of low light and dry heat in my home doesn't favor most flora. Which is why I've been so surprised the past couple of years when I am greeted by this tropical explosion in my living room. My children have named them “snorchids,” because they rebloom after the first snow. The blooms generally last until the crocuses are pushing up, cheering up the wintery windowsill.

Reading in the Southern Hemisphere

Greetings from Argentina! I am loving every minute of my vacation, but I have to admit it has not been the time of quiet contemplation I had anticipated. First, I had a couple of Kindle titles (I bought them before I realized how they were data mining my reading habits), but then realized the power here is of the 220 volt variety, so I can't recharge the iPhone. I also didn't love one of the paper titles I brought. So I've been bookless here for a few days.

The good news is that Buenos Aires is home to one of the world's great bookstores, El Ateneo, a former theatre turned into both a shop and a meeting place. I should be able to find something there to satisfy my need to read!

After a day at the Cementario Recoleta, I'm thinking of something with a "Gothic" vibe. Since I have no review, I thought I'd at least share a picture. You could spend a week in the cemetery, and not see it all. Most people head directly for Evita Peron's grave, but it's the older (and less well attended) masouleums that are the most interesting, I think.
